The group was originally a workers' rights organization that helped workers get unemployment insurance but rapidly changed into a union of farm workers.

The organization he founded, assigned hundreds of contracts and leaded a landmark law that made California farm workers the only ones in the nation entitled to protected union activity. In his most long- lasting legacy, Chavez gave people a sense of their own power. Farm workers soon discovered they could ask for dignity and reasonable wages. Volunteers learned various tactics later put to use in other social movements. People who refused to buy grapes realized that even the smallest gesture could help force a historic change. His ways of choosing to do the strikes changed drastically later on the life in working in fields.
